British pop icon Kim Wilde, known for unforgettable hits like “Kids in America,” “Chequered Love,” and “You Came,” is reviving the spirit of the 1980s with her new album, “Closer.” Released on Friday, this album blends new wave, pop, and rock, packed with the catchy melodies that made Wilde a household name—powered by her unmistakable voice.

“Recording my 15th album has been an absolute joy,” she says. “It feels like a natural companion to my 1988 album ‘Close,’ and I believe it perfectly reflects where I am musically today.”

The album opens with “Midnight Train,” a whirlwind of deep, atmospheric synths and pulsating drums, evoking neon lights, shimmering disco balls, and fog machines—even though none of these appear in the music video. The song builds up to a crashing electric guitar solo, adding to its intensity. Meanwhile, the track “Scorpio” has an intro reminiscent of Wilde’s classic hit, “Kids in America,” bringing a sense of nostalgia.

Kim Wilde Duet with Another 80s Icon

For “Closer,” Wilde collaborated with another legend from the 80s—former Ultravox frontman and multi-talented musician Midge Ure (“Dancing with Tears in My Eyes,” “If I Was”) on the melancholic track “Sorrow Replaced.”

Another standout from the album is “Hourglass Human,” a duet with her niece Scarlett Wilde, who frequently joins Kim on tour.

At 64, Kim Wilde still sounds remarkably similar to how she did at 28 when “Close” was first released. Her signature nasal tone, engaging style, and synth-driven, powerful pop sound remain largely unchanged, proving her timeless appeal.

The latter half of the album—its “B-side,” so to speak—might not be as instantly catchy, but overall, “Closer” is an impressive piece of work that’s a joy to listen to.

Fans will also have the chance to hear her latest tracks live as she embarks on a European tour next month, starting in Sweden and making stops in Belgium, France, the UK, Ireland, and Germany.
