The news was confirmed by her daughter, Maritess Gutierrez, through an emotional statement shared on social media. Gutierrez wrote, “It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved mother, Gloria Galla Gutierrez, also known as Gloria Romero, who peacefully joined our Creator today.” She expressed gratitude for the public’s support, prayers, and condolences, adding, “She will be deeply missed.”

Born Gloria Borrego Galla, Romero began her acting career at the age of 16 during the golden age of Philippine cinema. She starred in iconic films such as Cofradia, Pilya, Despachadora, and Dalagang Ilokana, for which she earned the FAMAS Best Actress Award. Later in her career, she continued to shine in remarkable roles in films like Bilangin ang Bituin sa Langit alongside Nora Aunor, Tanging Yaman, Magnifico, and Rainbow’s Sunset.

Romero also made her mark on television, playing unforgettable characters such as Minerva Chavez in Palibhasa Lalake and Doña Amparo in Familia Zaragoza. Her final role was Lola Goreng in Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko.

A public viewing will be held at Arlington Memorial Chapels in Quezon City on Monday and Tuesday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

Romero’s breakthrough came in 1952 with the film Madam X, but it was her performance in Dalagang Ilokana (1954) that truly launched her to fame, earning her the prestigious FAMAS Best Actress Award.

This marked the start of a remarkable career, with over 250 films and TV appearances to her name. Notable works include Condemned, Nagbabagang Luha, Tanging Yaman, and Rainbow’s Sunset.

Throughout her career, she received numerous accolades, including Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress awards from esteemed organisations such as FAMAS, the Film Academy of the Philippines, and Gawad Urian.
