Brian Murphy, the actor and comedian famous for his roles in the 1970s British sitcoms Man About the House and George and Mildred, has passed away at the age of 92. He died at his home in Kent on Sunday morning.
Murphy began his career working closely with theatre director Joan Littlewood, who played a significant role in shaping his early work. Over the years, he became a familiar face on British television, appearing in popular shows like Holby City, The Catherine Tate Show, Benidorm, and Last of the Summer Wine.

His friend and agent, Thomas Bowington, paid tribute to Murphy, calling him a “joyful and deeply kind-hearted man” and praising his talent and humanity. Born on the Isle of Wight in 1932, Murphy started his acting journey in the 1950s as part of the Theatre Workshop, a groundbreaking group founded by Joan Littlewood and Gerry Raffles. The group aimed to modernise theatre and make it accessible to working-class audiences.
Murphy performed in numerous Shakespeare productions under Littlewood’s direction and appeared in her only feature film, Sparrows Can’t Sing, a classic kitchen-sink comedy. However, he is best remembered for his role in Man About the House, a popular ITV sitcom about a man sharing a flat with two women in the 1970s. The show’s success led to the spin-off George and Mildred, where Murphy played George Roper, a henpecked husband, opposite Yootha Joyce as his sharp-tongued wife.
Murphy is survived by his wife, Linda Regan, an actress known for her role in Hi-de-Hi!, and their two sons. Linda shared a heartfelt tribute, saying, “I was lucky to have found my soulmate in my lifetime. Brian, I will love you forever.”
Brian Murphy’s legacy as a talented and beloved figure in British comedy and theatre will continue to be cherished by fans and colleagues alike.
